German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is proactively addressing economic concerns by dispatching his economy minister to China next month, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday. The trip aims to tackle issues such as a growing trade deficit and difficulties accessing raw materials, as well as to discuss the regulation of artificial intelligence.

Katherina Reiche, responsible for economic affairs and energy, will undertake her inaugural visit to China from May 26 to 29. Her itinerary includes stops in Beijing and potentially the southern port city of Guangzhou, according to sources familiar with the plans.

This visit underscores Berlin's increasing unease over economic relations with China, amid efforts to fortify Germany's trade position globally.
