In a significant development for New Zealand's judiciary, Attorney-General Chris Bishop has announced the appointment of Associate Judge Rachel Julienne Sussock as a Judge of the High Court, reinforcing the bench with a jurist known for her deep expertise in commercial litigation and public law.

The appointment, formally recommended to the Governor-General by Attorney-General Hon Judith Collins, will take effect from 1 June 2026, with Justice Sussock set to preside in the Auckland High Court, one of the country's busiest judicial centres.

A Career Spanning Public Service and Complex Commercial Litigation

Justice Sussock brings more than three decades of legal experience across both public and private sectors, positioning her as a well-rounded addition to the High Court at a time when complex commercial, financial, and regulatory disputes are on the rise.

A graduate of Victoria University of Wellington, where she earned an LLB (Hons) alongside a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration in 1991, Sussock began her legal career at Phillips Fox Wellington—now part of global law firm DLA Piper—gaining early exposure to high-level legal practice.

Her move to the Crown Law Office in 1993 marked a pivotal phase, where she served as Assistant Crown Counsel and later Crown Counsel within the Public Commercial Team. During her tenure through to 2001, she worked on complex government legal matters, contributing to the development of public law and commercial litigation involving the Crown.

Return to Practice and Rise in Commercial Law

Justice Sussock's judicial career began with her appointment as an Associate Judge of the High Court in 2020, a role in which she handled a broad range of civil matters, including procedural and interlocutory applications, as well as complex commercial cases.
