NSFAS Disburses R621M to Over 200,000 TVET Students, Moves Swiftly to Resolve Data Discrepancies

NSFAS has initiated an intensive support programme in collaboration with TVET colleges to address the discrepancies.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has successfully disbursed R621 million in student allowances to 203,653 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students, reinforcing its commitment to timely financial support and uninterrupted academic activity across South Africa's higher education sector.

The payments, completed in line with NSFAS's 17 April 2026 commitment, form part of a broader operational push to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and stabilise funding flows for thousands of students who rely on financial aid for accommodation, food, and learning materials.

Major Disbursement Supports Academic Continuity

NSFAS said the large-scale disbursement underscores its ongoing efforts to ensure that students receive allowances on time, thereby safeguarding teaching and learning processes at TVET colleges nationwide.

12,000 Students Flagged in Data Verification Process

However, during routine verification and reconciliation processes, NSFAS identified approximately 12,000 students who did not qualify for inclusion in the current payment cycle.

According to the scheme, these exclusions were primarily due to data exchange inconsistencies between institutional records and NSFAS systems—an issue that has periodically affected payment accuracy across the sector.

While the affected students were not included in this disbursement run, NSFAS emphasized that corrective action is already underway.

NSFAS has initiated an intensive support programme in collaboration with TVET colleges to address the discrepancies. This includes:

• Deployment of specialist teams to institutions across all provinces

• Regional working sessions with college administrative staff to verify and correct student data

"NSFAS is actively assisting all affected colleges in reviewing and correcting student records," the scheme said, adding that institutions are being urged to fast-track corrections to avoid further delays.

Once data issues have been resolved and verified, NSFAS will assess the need for a supplementary payment run to ensure that all eligible students receive their allowances without undue delay.
