The Telangana Governor, Shiv Pratap Shukla, made a decisive move on Sunday, nominating former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin and retired professor M Kodandaram as members of the Telangana Legislative Council under the governor's quota. This nomination comes after a significant delay attributed to legal obstacles and intricate political discourse.
Azharuddin, who was sworn in as the Minister for Minority Welfare on October 31 of the previous year, faces a critical deadline. He must secure election to the legislature by April 30, a statutory requirement within six months of swearing-in. The urgency of the situation was a topic of discussion during a crucial meeting between Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the governor on April 19.
Kodandaram, noted for his pivotal role in the Telangana agitation as the chairman of the Joint Action Committee, was nominated as an MLC in 2024. However, his appointment hangs in balance due to ongoing court hearings. These proceedings were initiated by Sravan Dasoju and Kurra Satyanarayana, who contest the rejection of their nominations during the BRS regime.
