Remembering Raghu Rai: A Legend Through the Lens

Raghu Rai, a celebrated Indian photographer known for capturing the essence of India's evolution, has passed away at 83. Honored with the Padma Shri, Rai's work highlighted human emotions and brought significant global attention to events like the Bhopal Gas tragedy and the Bangladesh war.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday paid tribute to Raghu Rai, an internationally acclaimed photographer who passed away at 83 in New Delhi. Fadnavis remarked that India has lost a towering journalism figure, whose lens captured the nation's evolving essence and human emotions.

Rai's illustrious career included impactful photo essays for major Indian and global publications. His powerful photographs of events such as the Bhopal Gas tragedy brought international attention, while his work on the Bangladesh war earned him the prestigious Padma Shri in 1972.

Rai was celebrated globally, serving on juries for prestigious photo contests and receiving numerous honors, including France's Officier des Arts et des Lettres in 2009. Fadnavis praised Rai's ability to convey profound truths and compassion through images, noting that his legacy will continue to document modern India's journey.
