Mali's Defense Minister Killed Amid Surging Rebel Attacks
Mali's Defense Minister, Gen. Sadio Camara, was killed in a coordinated attack by rebels and jihadi groups. This heightened violence underscores Mali's struggle with separatists and militant groups linked to al-Qaida and IS. The attacks signify a symbolic victory for rebels reclaiming control in the north.
In a significant blow to the Malian government, Defense Minister Gen. Sadio Camara was killed amid wide-ranging assaults by rebels and jihadi factions. These groups seized towns and military bases across Mali, adding to the country's ongoing instability.
The separatist Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) confirmed that Russian and Malian forces withdrew from Kidal, a key northern town. The withdrawal coincided with coordinated attacks involving the al-Qaida-linked group JNIM.
Region-wide concerns escalate as the Economic Community of West African States called for united efforts against escalating violence. Mali's pivot toward Russian military support, a response to Western partners' withdrawal, faces scrutiny after the attacks.
