Hundreds of protesters clashed with emergency services in a remote Australian town after the arrest of a man suspected of murdering a 5-year-old Indigenous girl, police stated on Friday. Authorities, including Australia's Prime Minister and the Northern Territory's police commissioner, appealed for peace as anger swelled among approximately 400 Indigenous community members.

Footage from the ABC revealed protesters demanding 'payback,' a traditional form of justice in Aboriginal societies. They hurled objects, set fires, and injured officers and medics, also damaging emergency vehicles. Police resorted to tear gas to break up the crowd.

The suspect, Jefferson Lewis, 47, allegedly abducted and killed the young girl, according to police. He faced vigilante action upon turning himself in. Her body was found on Thursday by locals searching the bushland. Given the suspect's criminal history, he was moved to Darwin to ensure his safety, while officials urge the public to let justice take its course.
