India Sets New Standards for Assistive Innovation
The Bureau of Indian Standards announced six new standards for assistive products, aligning with global benchmarks to enhance mobility aids and accessibility design. Developed under the Indian Council of Medical Research, these standards aim to boost accessibility for disabled and aged individuals, supporting the Accessible India Campaign and opening export opportunities.
In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has rolled out six new standards for assistive products, covering items from elbow crutches to portable wheelchair ramps. This initiative aligns India's disability-aid sector with global norms.
Developed through the Indian Council of Medical Research's initiative, these standards are meticulously tailored to meet international measures. They cover a comprehensive range of assistive devices like mobility aids, accessible design for tactile maps, and braille signage, ensuring that disabled persons can navigate public areas safely and independently.
The bureaucratic effort supports the federal Accessible India Campaign, targeting universal accessibility for persons with disabilities. As India's population ages, the demand for assistive technologies grows, and these standards promise to enhance domestic innovation while meeting international quality benchmarks, facilitating market expansion.
