A 45-year-old man faced London’s Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday, charged with attempted murder following a stabbing attack on two Jewish men in Golders Green, north London. Authorities have classified the incident as a suspected terrorist attack, subsequently raising the national terrorism threat level to indicate a highly likely occurrence within the next six months.
The attack adds to a series of recent anti-Semitic incidents in the area, which has a large Jewish community. In response, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to enhance protective measures for Jewish citizens. Meanwhile, future pro-Palestinian marches might encounter new restrictions amidst calls for increased safety for the approximately 290,000-strong Jewish community in the UK.
On the day of the incident, Essa Suleiman, a British citizen of Somali origin, appeared in court charged with attempted murder. The charges pertain to the stabbings of 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Shine, and possessing a bladed weapon. Suleiman, linked to a separate attacked earlier that day, remains in custody and is scheduled for another court appearance at the Old Bailey on May 15.
