Malian Unrest: Insurgents Call for Ascension to Sharia Law
Al Qaeda-linked insurgents in Mali are urging citizens to revolt against the military government and adopt Sharia law after recent widespread attacks. Their statement, in French, calls for unity among all societal segments and criticizes the current regime. They demand a peaceful transition, highlighting the urgency of preventing chaos.
In a notable shift, Al Qaeda-affiliated insurgents in Mali have issued a call for citizens to rise against the military government, advocating for the transition to Sharia law, according to their rare French-language statement. This follows significant attacks across the nation, including a coordinated assault with the Azawad Liberation Front.
JNIM, who are generally known for statements in Arabic, directed their message to every part of Malian society, decrying the current leadership as a 'terrorist junta' and urging a peaceful and inclusive transition. They argue that displacing the current government is only a part of the solution.
The group has also threatened further disruptions, including potential blockades on Bamako, to exert pressure for political changes. Mali's leadership, however, claims to have matters under control with promises of neutralizing these insurgent forces, amidst a backdrop of political turmoil.
