Telangana Leads with Pioneering Support for Deceased Gig Workers' Families

The Telangana government inaugurated a unique initiative, offering Rs 5 lakh to the families of three deceased gig workers who died in accidents. This Rs 5 lakh comes from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, with extra compensation from platform companies, as the state prepares for new legislation benefiting gig workers.

The government of Telangana has initiated a groundbreaking program, offering financial backing to families of gig workers who passed away in road accidents. In a move hailed as unprecedented in the nation, the state provided Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to each family.

The disbursement was overseen by State Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy, with support from the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union. Additionally, the families received supplementary compensation of Rs 10 lakh each from the companies employing the deceased, making a total of Rs 15 lakh per family.

This initiative serves as a precursor to forthcoming legislation aimed at providing insurance for gig workers, with execution dependent on the formalization of the gig workers' act's rules.
