In a tragic incident at a sponge iron factory in Odisha's Angul district, three workers lost their lives due to suspected suffocation, officials reported on Tuesday.
The workers, identified as Sridhar Baghel, Pintu Kumar, and Mangal Majhi, were discovered unconscious late on Monday within the cooling unit of the factory. Despite being rushed to a hospital in Hindol, medical professionals declared them dead upon arrival. The victims were residents of Sundargarh district.
Authorities, including Angul's Additional District Magistrate Pratap Pritimaya, have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. There is also a separate inquiry into why the workers were transported to a hospital in a neighboring district instead of a closer facility. If criminal negligence is uncovered, officials have promised appropriate actions, and a detailed safety audit is scheduled for the next 15 days. The cause of death is anticipated to be suffocation, pending confirmation from post-mortem examinations.
