Delhi Tops India's Theft Charts Again: A 2024 Analysis
Delhi reported the highest number of theft cases among Indian metros in 2024, contributing to nearly three-fourths of such cases nationwide. The National Crime Records Bureau reveals a decline in overall 'offences against property,' but theft remains the most reported crime, dominating with 87.9% of property crime cases.

According to the latest report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), theft has emerged as the most prevalent crime in major metropolitan cities across India, with Delhi alone accounting for a significant portion. In 2024, Delhi registered 1,80,973 theft cases, amounting to nearly 497 instances each day.
Delhi's theft statistics contributed to 73.3% of the national theft cases, eclipsing other cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Jaipur, as per the Crime in India report. The capital city leads with an overwhelming margin over other metros in 'offences against property.'
Overall, crimes under 'offences against property' saw a 14.4% decrease from 2023, yet thefts remained dominant, representing 87.9% of property-related crimes. While other cities also reported thefts, Delhi's figures highlight a persistent and concerning trend, despite improvements in other crime categories.
