The New Zealand Government has officially launched the 2026 appointment round for King's Counsel (KC), one of the highest honours within the country's legal profession, with Attorney-General Hon Chris Bishop confirming applications will open later this month.
The announcement signals the beginning of a closely watched selection process that recognises exceptional legal advocacy, professional excellence, and outstanding contributions to the administration of justice in New Zealand.
King's Counsel appointments are regarded as among the most prestigious distinctions available to senior lawyers, often recognising decades of leadership in complex litigation, appellate advocacy, public law, commercial disputes, criminal law, and broader service to the legal system.
Under New Zealand's constitutional framework, King's Counsel are formally appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Attorney-General and with the concurrence of the Chief Justice.
Attorney-General Chris Bishop said the process would continue to involve extensive consultation with the legal profession to ensure the integrity and quality of appointments.
"The Solicitor-General will consult with the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Bar Association regarding the candidates," Mr Bishop said.
"This is important input into final decisions that I recommend to the Governor-General. I value the input of the profession into these appointments."
The King's Counsel designation represents the senior rank of barrister and is traditionally awarded to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill in advocacy before the courts, as well as leadership, integrity, and service within the profession.
Legal experts note that appointment as King's Counsel often reflects years of handling major constitutional cases, commercial litigation, regulatory disputes, criminal appeals, and precedent-setting legal matters.
In addition to recognising courtroom advocacy, the Governor-General also retains discretion to appoint King's Counsel in acknowledgement of extraordinary contributions to the law in areas beyond traditional advocacy.
This provision allows recognition of distinguished legal scholarship, law reform work, public service, judicial support, legal education, and contributions to the broader justice system.
The Crown Law Office has published updated guidelines and application materials outlining the eligibility requirements, selection criteria, and appointment process for the 2026 round.
Applications officially open on 25 May 2026, with submissions required to be lodged electronically with Crown Law no later than 22 June 2026.
The Government expects successful appointments to be announced in October 2026 following the completion of professional consultation and final recommendations.
The appointment process is expected to attract significant attention across New Zealand's legal sector, where KC status carries considerable professional distinction and is often viewed as recognition of the highest standards of legal excellence.
Traditionally, newly appointed King's Counsel become senior leaders within the profession and frequently appear in the country's most important and complex legal proceedings, including Supreme Court appeals, major commercial disputes, constitutional litigation, and significant criminal matters.
The announcement comes amid ongoing discussion within New Zealand's legal community about diversity, accessibility, and representation at the senior levels of the profession, with recent appointment rounds drawing attention to the importance of recognising excellence across a broad range of practice areas and backgrounds.
The Government says the appointment process remains focused on maintaining public confidence in the justice system while ensuring the legal profession continues to recognise advocates and legal leaders of the highest calibre.
Guidelines and application forms for the 2026 King's Counsel appointment round are available through the Crown Law Office website.
