Arcadia Mayor Faces Federal Charges: A Web of Secret Foreign Ties
Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang pleads guilty to acting as a foreign agent for China, spreading Beijing's propaganda. Wang resigned from her position and city council seat. She was involved in running a pro-China website, promoting content favorable to Beijing, and collaborating with known Chinese government officials.
The mayor of Arcadia, California, Eileen Wang, has agreed to plead guilty to a federal charge of acting as a foreign agent for China, according to U.S. officials. Wang, who served in a heavily Chinese-American suburb of Los Angeles, resigned from her posts after the case came to light.
Wang appeared before a federal magistrate judge on Monday, agreeing to a plea that admits to her role in spreading propaganda for Beijing. A bond was set at $25,000, and proceedings were conducted through a Mandarin interpreter. The charge could lead to a sentence of up to 10 years.
The investigation revealed Wang helped manage a website purporting to be a legitimate news source but was actually a tool for disseminating pro-China messages. Her actions were coordinated with directives from Chinese officials, raising concerns over foreign influence in U.S. democracy.
