Panun Kashmir Pushes for Recognition of Genocide Victims in Census 2027

Panun Kashmir has submitted a memorandum to the Census Commissioner of India, advocating for the distinct enumeration of displaced Kashmiri Pandits as 'internally displaced genocide victims and survivors' in Census 2027. The group emphasizes the importance of proper classification for constitutional recognition and policy measures.

Panun Kashmir has officially requested the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India to acknowledge displaced Kashmiri Pandits as 'internally displaced genocide victims and survivors' in the upcoming Census 2027.

Led by Dr Agnishekhar, the delegation highlighted that Census 2027 must reflect the unique circumstances of the community, which stem from genocide conditions rather than voluntary migration. The group argued that how this community is identified will significantly influence future legislative and policy frameworks.

The memorandum insists on a distinct demographic recording, preserving the community's historical residence links, and recognizing the failures that led to prolonged displacement. Panun Kashmir also reminded authorities of India's international obligations to establish supportive legislative mechanisms under the 1948 UN Convention on genocide.
