A former imam from east London has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of multiple sexual offences. Abdul Halim Khan was found guilty of 21 charges, including the rape and sexual assault of women and girls, dating from 2004 to 2015.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Khan abused his position as a religious leader in the Bangladeshi Muslim community to exploit his victims. He manipulated the women and girls by pretending to possess spiritual powers and instilling fear of black magic that would harm them if they reported the abuse.

The investigation led to more than 50 witness testimonies. Despite his denial, Khan was found guilty on multiple counts, leading to a life sentence with a minimum of 20 years served. Authorities hope this case encourages other victims to come forward.
