Crackdown in Sri Lanka: Foreign Nationals Arrested Over Visa Violations
Sri Lankan authorities have arrested several foreign nationals, including three Indians, for allegedly overstaying without valid visas. The arrests come amidst a crackdown on illegal cybercrime operations, with scores of Chinese and Indian individuals detained in recent weeks for their involvement in international syndicates.
In a significant development, Sri Lankan police have taken custody of three Indian nationals in Trincomalee for overstaying without valid visas. The arrests were made on Thursday, as part of an ongoing crackdown on visa violations and illegal activities in the country.
In a parallel operation conducted in the western coastal town of Kaluthara, 14 foreign nationals, including Chinese and Malaysian citizens, were also arrested under similar charges. This wave of detentions reflects Sri Lanka's increasing efforts to curtail cybercrime activities allegedly perpetrated by foreigners under the guise of tourism.
Authorities have identified a pattern in which foreign nationals, predominantly from China and India, form parts of international syndicates operating cybercrime rings. Recent operations have seen the arrest of a large group of individuals in the southern resorts of Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Midigama, further emphasizing the reach and impact of these criminal networks.
