Protest Erupts over Inner Line Permit Digitisation in Itanagar

In Itanagar, protesters clashed with police during a bandh demanding digitisation of the Inner Line Permit system. The protest, led by the Scheduled Tribe Bachao Andolon Committee, caused tensions but remained largely peaceful. The government announced measures to strengthen permit mechanisms, aiming to restore normalcy.

Protests erupted in the Itanagar Capital Region as demonstrators took to the streets, demanding the complete digitisation of the Inner Line Permit system. Organised by the Scheduled Tribe Bachao Andolon Committee (STBAC), the protest escalated when stones were thrown at the police, leading to the release of tear gas.

The unrest prompted the police to release detained leaders in an attempt to diffuse the situation. The shutdown, which began on Thursday morning, disrupted daily life, affecting vehicular movement and closing markets.

The Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet announced plans to introduce a digital ILP system with advanced verification methods to strengthen control over illegal entry and address concerns over land rights and governance, striving to restore peace in the capital.
