India Denies Erosion of Media Freedom and Minority Rights

India, rejecting claims of declining media freedom and minority rights, asserts itself as a vibrant democracy. Sibi George of the Ministry of External Affairs addressed these issues during Prime Minister Modi's Netherlands visit, emphasizing India's religious diversity and peaceful democratic processes as evidence of its commitment to free expression.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Netherlands, India firmly denied allegations of declining media freedom and erosion of minority rights. In a media briefing, Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, labeled India as a 'vibrant democracy' that ensures free speech for all its citizens.

Addressing remarks reportedly made by Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten regarding perceived declines in freedom of expression, George defended India's cultural and religious diversity. He highlighted how numerous religions have thrived in India, noting the peaceful coexistence and flourishing of communities like Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

George cited recent democratic elections, pointing to India's success in eliminating poverty without violence. He underscored that India's population includes more than 20 percent minorities, up from 11 percent at independence, as evidence of its democratic strength and inclusivity.
