Sikkim Adopts Anand Marriage Act for Sikh Unions
The Anand Marriage Act will be implemented in Sikkim from June 1, enabling Sikh couples to register their marriages under a dedicated legal framework. This follows a Supreme Court ruling mandating local registration rules, and Sikkim's subsequent official notification for the Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2026.

The Anand Marriage Act is set to have its provisions come into force in Sikkim from June 1, marking a significant shift for the Sikh community in the state. The Union law ministry confirmed this move, allowing Sikh couples to register their traditional 'Anand Karaj' marriages under their own legal framework rather than the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955.
This development follows a Supreme Court ruling in the 2025 case of Amanjot Singh Chadha Vs Union of India, which led to the central government's decision. The court had emphasized the need to address administrative gaps in the Anand Marriage Act by mandating state-specific registration rules, a call that Sikkim has now answered with its 2026 notification.
Previously, the lack of rules in states like Sikkim forced Sikh couples to either forgo marriage registration or do so under the less specific Hindu Marriage Act. With the new regulations in place, Sikkim joins other states in honoring the specific cultural traditions of Sikh weddings, ensuring administrative clarity and legal recognition.
