The Quad grouping, comprising the United States, Japan, India, and Australia, announced significant measures on Tuesday to expand cooperation in critical minerals and maritime operations. The move is seen as a strategic response to increasing Chinese military activities in the Indo-Pacific region.
At the meeting held in India and chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the coalition's foreign ministers pledged support for a free and open Indo-Pacific. They outlined initiatives to boost regional resilience and capacity, including measures for enhanced maritime surveillance and infrastructure development.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of maritime security, noting that 60% of global trade routes pass through the Indo-Pacific. The ministers also expressed concerns over military tensions in maritime territories and reiterated a firm stance against actions threatening regional peace.
