Assam Assembly Passes Controversial Uniform Civil Code Bill

The Assam Assembly has approved a Uniform Civil Code Bill, which aims to establish a standardized legal framework for personal affairs such as marriage and divorce regardless of religion. This development positions Assam as the third state in India to adopt such a measure, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

The Assam Assembly passed a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill on Wednesday, establishing a unified legal structure for marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships across all religions. The opposition sought a select committee review but their request was denied, leading them to protest the decision during the session.

With the passage of this legislation, Assam joins Uttarakhand and Gujarat in implementing the Uniform Civil Code, marking a significant step in Indian legislative reforms. The Bill was introduced with the aim of banning polygamy and making the registration of live-in relationships mandatory. Exemptions are made for Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam, with strict penalties proposed for non-compliance, including imprisonment.
