Indian Railways is preparing to launch its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway, marking a significant milestone in India's transition toward clean and sustainable transportation.

The Railway Ministry has approved the introduction of a 10-car hydrogen-powered trainset equipped with a 1200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The train is expected to begin operations soon and will run at a maximum speed of 75 kilometres per hour.

The initiative places India among a small group of countries experimenting with hydrogen-powered rail systems as governments worldwide seek alternatives to fossil fuel-based transportation.

Hydrogen Technology Seen as Future of Clean Rail Transport

Haryana's Jind-Sonipat Section Chosen as Pilot Route

The Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana has been selected as the pilot corridor for India's first hydrogen-powered train operations.

Indian Railways has already established an indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind to support the project.

Officials confirmed that the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the required licence for:

  • Hydrogen storage

  • Compression systems

  • Dispensing operations

at the facility.

The dedicated infrastructure has been designed to ensure safe handling and refuelling of compressed hydrogen gas under strict operational protocols.

Advanced Refuelling and Safety Systems Installed

To support the hydrogen train operations, Indian Railways has installed:

  • Hydrogen compression systems

  • Refuelling infrastructure

  • Safety monitoring equipment

  • Backup compressor units

  • Technical support systems

  • Critical spare components

The system includes several layers of safety technology, including:

  • Hydrogen leak detectors

  • Flame detection systems

  • Continuous monitoring sensors

Officials said the safety equipment will undergo regular inspections and cleaning to prevent operational risks caused by dust accumulation or technical malfunction.

The project also includes approved operation and maintenance manuals developed under the supervision of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

Strict Safety and Monitoring Protocols Planned

  • 24x7 monitoring of the hydrogen refuelling system

  • Deployment of trained and certified technical personnel

  • Regular maintenance inspections

During the early operational phase, trained technical staff will accompany the train to monitor system performance and ensure smooth functioning.

Maintenance facilities at Shakurbasti have also been prepared with additional safety provisions and operational guidelines for handling hydrogen-powered rolling stock.

Part of India's Wider Clean Energy Transition

The hydrogen train project forms part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and modernise its transport infrastructure.

Indian Railways has already undertaken several major sustainability initiatives, including:

  • Electrification of railway routes

  • Expansion of renewable energy use

  • Energy-efficient station upgrades

  • Reduction of diesel dependence

  • Introduction of green technologies

Hydrogen-powered trains are being viewed as a potential solution for routes where full electrification may be difficult or economically challenging.

The project also aligns with India's national clean energy goals and its long-term commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
