Centre Intensifies Development Push in Northeast as Raksha Khadse Reviews Sports and Livelihood Projects in Meghalaya

The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating development across the North Eastern Region, with Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse conducting a high-level district review visit to Williamnagar in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills under the Poorvottar Sampark Setu initiative.

The visit formed part of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region's (MDoNER) broader strategy to strengthen coordination between the Centre and states while ensuring that development programmes are effectively reaching communities at the grassroots level.

Through the initiative, Union Ministers regularly visit districts across the Northeast to assess infrastructure projects, monitor implementation of central schemes, engage with local administrations, and better understand region-specific developmental priorities.

Poorvottar Sampark Setu Aims to Deepen Centre-State Coordination

The Poorvottar Sampark Setu initiative was launched by MDoNER to improve governance coordination and accelerate inclusive development across India's northeastern states.

Officials say the programme is designed to:

• Address infrastructure and livelihood gaps

The initiative reflects the Government's growing emphasis on integrating the Northeast more closely into national development priorities while recognising the region's unique social, cultural, and geographical characteristics.

Minister Reviews Sports Infrastructure in East Garo Hills

A major focus of Raksha Khadse's visit was the assessment of sports infrastructure and youth development projects in the district.

The Minister inspected the Artificial Football Turf at the RGHSS Playground in Williamnagar, reviewing efforts aimed at expanding access to modern sporting facilities and encouraging greater youth participation in sports.

She also reviewed progress on the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall at Tambo A'ding, which is currently under construction.

The facility is expected to strengthen sports training opportunities in the region and support the development of young athletes from Meghalaya and surrounding northeastern states.

The Government has increasingly focused on the Northeast as a major sporting talent hub, particularly in disciplines such as:

• Football

• Boxing

• Athletics

• Weightlifting

• Archery

• Martial arts

Officials say investments in sports infrastructure are intended to provide better training environments while helping young athletes compete at national and international levels.

Government Sees Northeast as Key Sporting Region

Speaking during the visit, Raksha Khadse said the Northeast occupies a central place in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for balanced and inclusive national development.

"The North Eastern Region occupies a central place in the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for inclusive and balanced development," she said.

She added that initiatives such as Poorvottar Sampark Setu are helping the Government maintain closer engagement with local communities and district administrations to better understand regional needs.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with progress being made in sports development and local livelihood programmes.

"I am encouraged to see the progress being made in strengthening sports infrastructure, promoting sustainable livelihoods through fisheries and animal husbandry, and preserving the rich handicraft traditions of East Garo Hills," she said.

Focus on Fisheries and Rural Livelihood Development

In addition to sports infrastructure, the Minister reviewed initiatives related to:

• Fisheries

• Animal husbandry

• Rural economic development

• Livelihood generation

Discussions with local officials focused on improving productivity, strengthening local capacities, and creating sustainable income opportunities for rural communities dependent on agriculture and allied sectors.

Raksha Khadse also visited facilities displaying traditional handicrafts and locally produced artisanal products from East Garo Hills.

She praised the region's rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship while emphasising the need to strengthen market access for local artisans and self-help groups.

The Minister highlighted the economic potential of indigenous crafts and community-based enterprises in supporting rural livelihoods and preserving cultural identity.

Government agencies are increasingly focusing on:
