Varsha Gaikwad, Mumbai Congress leader, has reached out to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railway Minister, seeking urgent action to rehabilitate those affected by the recent eviction drive at Garib Nagar, near Bandra railway station.
The Western Railway conducted a five-day demolition effort, eliminating over 500 structures to facilitate infrastructure growth, but displacing many families and causing a humanitarian crisis. Gaikwad emphasized the distress faced by women, children, and the economically disadvantaged due to this hasty eviction.
She highlighted that many residents have longstanding ties to the area, possessing valid identity documentation and now face insecurity. Gaikwad urged the inclusion of a coordinated committee with the Maharashtra government and BMC to develop a fair rehabilitation strategy.
She called for a clear housing blueprint to ensure no eligible citizen faces homelessness due to future development actions without mitigation plans.
