Balka Suman, formerly an MP with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), found himself in custody on Saturday after allegedly making inciting statements directed at union activists. Suman had reportedly urged party trade union members in the Singareni Collieries to resort to aggressive actions, which included suggestions to burn office buildings and disrupt railway lines, in a bid to energize the workforce.
The situation unfolded with BRS supporters chanting slogans as Suman was escorted by police from the party's headquarters. Officials indicated that a formal arrest could occur later in the day. The controversy stems from a speech Suman delivered earlier, where he lamented the perceived lukewarm response from farmers and laborers to BRS-led protest efforts and proposed militant tactics to reclaim the coal workers' union's influence.
Following his comments, a case was registered at the Nampally police station, prompting a police visit to the BRS office that included sloganeering against the local government by party workers. Suman asserted his belief that the allegations were politically motivated, criticizing what he termed the government's anti-people policies. Despite this, he promised cooperation with law enforcement.
In response to widespread criticism, including from Union Minister Kishan Reddy, Suman later clarified his comments. He stated that his call for intense action was a strategic move to address governmental negligence and unfulfilled promises regarding welfare in the state-run Singareni Collieries.
