The security environment in West Bengal has come under scrutiny as Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee was attacked during a visit to a victim's family of post-election violence. Rajya Sabha member Derek O'Brien demanded answers from the authorities, particularly focusing on Home Minister Amit Shah's role in the security arrangements.
According to reports, Banerjee faced hostility in Sonarpur where he was allegedly attacked by locals amid his efforts to console families impacted by the political unrest. Objects, including stones and shoes, were thrown at him amidst cries of accusation, as his security was compromised. TMC accuses the BJP of orchestrating these disruptions for political reasons.
O'Brien, through a social media post, questioned the motives behind the withdrawal of Banerjee's security on the day of vote counting and sought clarification from the central government, pointing out the incident as an indication of deeper political tensions in the region.
