Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya joined officials and staff members of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for a special cycle ride at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday to mark World Bicycle Day 2026. Around 30 participants took part in the ride, completing a full lap of the stadium while promoting the message of fitness, environmental responsibility and sustainable mobility. Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse was also present at the event. The celebration formed part of the government's ongoing efforts to encourage healthy lifestyles through the Fit India Movement.

Cycling Promoted as a Tool for Better Health

In his message for World Bicycle Day, Dr Mandaviya said cycling should be viewed as much more than a leisure activity or exercise routine. He described it as a simple yet powerful habit that contributes to physical fitness, reduces pollution and supports the vision of a healthier and more developed India.

According to the Minister, incorporating cycling into daily life can help individuals improve their well-being while also benefiting society through reduced traffic congestion and cleaner air. This year's World Bicycle Day theme, "Cycling for a Greener Future," focuses on the role bicycles can play in reducing carbon emissions and encouraging environmentally friendly transport options.

Fit India Campaign Gains Momentum

Dr. Mandaviya highlighted the growing popularity of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle campaign, which has become one of the flagship activities under the Fit India Movement. He noted that increased use of bicycles can help reduce dependence on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles, supporting national efforts to lower pollution levels and promote sustainable living.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's repeated calls for reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the Minister said cycling offers an effective and accessible solution that benefits both individuals and the environment. A special nationwide edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle will be organised this Sunday to extend the World Bicycle Day celebrations across the country. The Minister encouraged young people to participate actively, register on the Fit India App and motivate friends and family members to join the movement.

India Prepares for Global Yogasana Championship

The focus on fitness will continue this week as India hosts the World Yogasana Sport Championship 2026 at the Eka Arena in Ahmedabad from 4 to 8 June. More than 500 athletes from over 70 countries are expected to participate in the championship, making it one of the largest international Yogasana events ever organised.

Officials view the tournament as another important step in promoting fitness, mental well-being and healthy living on a global platform.

The championship also supports India's efforts to expand international recognition for Yogasana as a competitive sport and strengthen its case for inclusion in future multi-sport events, including the Olympic Movement.

Government believes initiatives such as cycling campaigns and Yogasana competitions are helping create a culture of fitness while encouraging greater public participation in healthy and active lifestyles.
