Jose Mourinho Appeals to European Court of Human Rights Over Turkish Football Sanctions

Jose Mourinho has initiated legal action with the European Court of Human Rights, contesting sanctions imposed by the Turkish Football Federation while he was coaching at Fenerbahce. The court, located in Strasbourg, acknowledged receipt of Mourinho’s application as of June 1.

Mourinho faces a 600,000 Turkish lira fine and a one-match ban after showing unsportsmanlike conduct towards rival fans and criticizing refereeing standards. He claims the disciplinary and arbitration committees lack independence, which undermines his right to a fair trial.

The Portuguese coach also argues his freedom of speech was curtailed, and assert that the lack of transparency in the federation's decision-making process violated his rights. The ECHR has requested the Turkish government to respond on issues concerning tribunal impartiality and balancing free speech with the federation's interests.
