Thousands of New Zealand families are set to receive greater parenting support after the Government announced a $20 million investment aimed at helping parents better meet their children's learning, development, and wellbeing needs. Child Poverty Reduction Minister Louise Upston said raising children can be rewarding but often comes with significant challenges, particularly for families experiencing hardship or caring for children with additional needs. The new funding package is designed to strengthen support available to parents while contributing to the Government's Child and Youth Strategy priorities.

Research continues to show that positive parenting practices during a child's first five to six years can have a lasting impact on development, behaviour, and future wellbeing. The Government says the investment will help more families access proven support services during these important early years.

Proven parenting programmes set for expansion

Half of the funding will be used to strengthen parenting support across the wider system, while the remaining $10 million will be directed through the Social Investment Fund to help families facing the greatest challenges. Two established parenting programmes will receive funding to continue and expand their services. Triple P Positive Parenting, recognised internationally for its extensive evidence base, will receive support to meet increasing demand from parents seeking practical guidance and support.

Mellow Parenting, known in New Zealand as Hoki ki te Rito, will also expand its reach. The programme focuses on helping families dealing with high levels of stress, trauma, and complex life circumstances. Studies conducted both in New Zealand and overseas have found positive outcomes for participating families, including stronger parenting skills and improved child development.

National parenting platform to return

The funding package also includes support for the return of Tākai, a national parenting platform that provides trusted information, resources, and advice for parents, caregivers, and those working with families. The Government says the combined investment creates a broader range of support options, offering accessible resources for all parents while also providing intensive assistance for families requiring additional help.

Implementation of the package has already begun. Expansion of the parenting programmes is expected to take place over the coming year, while additional initiatives funded through the Social Investment Fund are currently being procured and are expected to begin later this year. The investment reflects a growing focus on early intervention, with the aim of giving children stronger foundations for healthy development and helping families navigate the challenges of raising children with confidence.
