The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, paving the way for a new metro corridor that will improve connectivity between key parts of Ahmedabad and the city's airport.
Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet cleared the construction of a 6.032-kilometre corridor with five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station. The approved route will include Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport stations. The project will be developed at a total estimated cost of ₹2,169.04 crore, including interest during construction. Once operational, Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will together have an active metro rail network spanning 77.63 kilometres.
Airport connectivity expected to improve urban mobility
The new corridor is designed to strengthen public transportation by connecting Ahmedabad Airport with the existing metro network while improving access to important residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient transit options.
Officials believe the extension will provide seamless integration with the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro corridor and support future urban development plans. The project is also expected to benefit upcoming sporting events, including the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030, as sports-related infrastructure is likely to be developed in nearby areas. Improved airport access is expected to make travel more convenient for residents, business travellers, and tourists while encouraging greater use of public transport across the city.
Metro expansion to support economy and sustainability
Authorities expect the project to ease traffic congestion by offering an efficient alternative to road transport. Reduced vehicle usage could help shorten travel times, improve road safety, and lower pressure on Ahmedabad's busy road network. Environmental benefits are also expected as metro systems generate significantly lower carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil-fuel-powered transportation. Expanding the metro network could contribute to cleaner urban mobility and support sustainability goals for the region.
The project is also anticipated to deliver economic benefits by improving access to key locations such as the airport, railway stations, and bus terminals. Better connectivity often encourages business activity, attracts investment, and supports development in areas that were previously less accessible. From a social perspective, the expanded network is expected to improve access to public transport for a wider range of residents, helping reduce mobility gaps and providing easier access to employment opportunities, education, and essential services.
The construction phase is projected to create employment for around 2,000 people during peak activity, while approximately 500 jobs are expected to be generated for the operation and maintenance of the system after completion. Officials described Phase 2(A) as a major step in Ahmedabad's urban development journey, with the potential to transform mobility, support economic growth, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
