AI-Powered Survey Vehicles to Transform Highway Maintenance

A new generation of technology is beginning to reshape how India's National Highways are monitored and maintained. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has introduced Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) equipped with advanced 3D laser-based systems, bringing faster inspections, smarter maintenance and greater accountability to the country's road network.
These specially designed vehicles travel across highways collecting highly detailed information about road conditions. Using laser profilers, GPS systems, high-resolution cameras and 3D imaging sensors, they can detect cracks, potholes, patches and surface irregularities while creating digital maps of road assets.
Faster Detection Means Quicker Repairs
The new system significantly improves the speed of highway surveys. Traditional methods could inspect only 20 to 80 kilometres in a day. NSVs can now survey up to 300 kilometres daily, allowing authorities to identify road defects much earlier and initiate corrective action without delay.
The process has also become much faster. Survey data is securely encrypted and transferred to a centralized NSV centre within 48 hours. Expert teams stationed across five zones then review the information and prepare reports. What previously required four to six months can now be completed within ten days, helping maintenance agencies respond more effectively to emerging issues.
AI and Digital Tools Strengthen Monitoring
All data collected by the survey vehicles is uploaded directly to the National Highways Authority of India's AI-powered Data Lake platform. This enables experts to analyze road conditions using real-time information and make evidence-based maintenance decisions.
A newly developed mobile application further improves transparency in the field. Site inspectors can access survey findings instantly, upload geo-tagged photographs, share inspection comments and monitor repair work directly from project locations. Digital notices are automatically issued to stakeholders after quality checks, reducing manual intervention and streamlining communication.
Every report undergoes a detailed review process before being approved, ensuring accuracy and consistency across the highway network.
Building Safer Roads Across India
The surveys will cover two-lane to eight-lane National Highways across different terrains, including freight corridors, heavily trafficked stretches and regions affected by challenging weather conditions. Inspections will be conducted every six months, ensuring that road defects are identified before they become major safety concerns.
One of the most significant changes is the focus on complete rectification. Earlier systems largely concentrated on identifying defects. Under the new framework, road maintenance agencies remain accountable until every reported issue is fully resolved.
The initiative marks a shift toward proactive highway management, where problems are addressed before they worsen. By combining artificial intelligence, digital governance and advanced survey technology, the government is working to deliver smoother journeys, safer roads and more efficient infrastructure maintenance for millions of commuters across the country.
