eThekwini continues to cement its reputation as a top tourism destination, thanks to its warm year-round climate, golden beaches, and rich cultural heritage. During the 2025 festive season, the city welcomed around 1.2 million visitors, with accommodation occupancy rising to 77%, up from 72% the previous year. Tourism spending during the period increased from R2.2 billion to R2.7 billion, representing a 24% boost. Mayor Cyril Xaba highlighted that eThekwini was recently ranked 14th among the world's best places to travel in 2026 by Time Out Worldwide, reflecting the strong upward trajectory of the local tourism sector.
The increase in visitor numbers was supported by the reopening of all 23 bathing beaches, made possible through extensive repairs and upgrades to sanitation infrastructure, which improved licence compliance, capacity, and effluent quality across the city.
Coordinated Efforts Driving Development
These achievements form part of the work of the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG), established to coordinate and accelerate interventions addressing developmental, infrastructure, economic, and service-delivery challenges within the municipality. The group also focuses on fostering collaboration between national, provincial, and local governments, while enhancing communication and engagement with stakeholders regarding progress on key initiatives.
The Mayor noted that these efforts extend beyond tourism and aim to create long-term improvements in the city's livability and functionality, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
Inner City and Road Infrastructure Revitalisation
The rejuvenation of eThekwini's inner city is progressing well, with major road networks within the CBD already rehabilitated. Roads completed include Sandile Thusi Road, Smiso Nkwanyana Road, Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, Soldiers Way, Market Road, and Margaret Mncadi Avenue, while Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street (formerly West Street) is currently undergoing refurbishment.
Significant progress has also been made in repairing flood-damaged infrastructure, including bridges and roads critical to city connectivity. Completed projects include the R20 million Tshelimnyama Bridge, the R40 million Phoenix Industrial Park Bridge, the R47 million Coedmore Bridge Road upgrade, and the R70 million Blundell Road Bridge in Shallcross. These infrastructure investments not only enhance transportation and accessibility but also support tourism growth, economic activity, and the overall quality of life for residents.
