India took another step forward in strengthening its indigenous defence capabilities as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the flight-test of the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast on June 15, 2026.

According to DRDO, the missile completed all mission objectives during the trial, with performance data being tracked and verified through a network of instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur. The successful test marks a significant milestone in India's efforts to build advanced long-range strike systems using homegrown technology.

Indigenous Technology at the Core of the Missile

The Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile has been designed and developed entirely within the country, bringing together the expertise of several DRDO laboratories and a wide range of Indian industry partners. Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, served as the nodal laboratory for the programme and coordinated the development of various critical systems integrated into the missile.

The project reflects the growing role of domestic defence manufacturers in developing sophisticated military platforms, with multiple Indian companies contributing to the missile's sub-systems and components. The successful flight-test also demonstrates the maturity of technologies developed under India's defence research ecosystem.

Senior Defence Officials Witness Successful Trial

The launch was witnessed by senior DRDO officials along with representatives from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force, both of which are expected to benefit from the capabilities offered by the missile in future operational roles.

Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, closely monitored the launch activities and reviewed the test results. Following the successful mission, he congratulated the scientists, engineers and technical teams who played a role in the development and testing of the missile.

Rajnath Singh Congratulates DRDO and Industry Partners

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO team and industry partners for achieving another important milestone in India's defence modernisation efforts. He commended everyone involved in the programme for their contribution to developing an advanced indigenous weapon system capable of enhancing the country's strategic capabilities.

The successful test of the LRLACM adds to a growing list of indigenous defence achievements and highlights India's continued focus on reducing dependence on foreign military technology while building advanced systems within the country.
