Return to Confinement: Greek Guérilla Leader's Release Overturned
Alexandros Giotopoulos, the former leader of Greece's defunct guerrilla group November 17, must return to prison after his release was overturned by the Supreme Court. Previously sentenced to life imprisonment, Giotopoulos had been freed for health reasons, but a prosecutorial decision has now reversed his release.
Alexandros Giotopoulos, the former mastermind behind Greece's notorious guerrilla group November 17, has been ordered to return to prison after the country's Supreme Court overturned his recent release. The decision comes after a prosecutor challenged his release, initially granted for health reasons.
Giotopoulos, now 82, was originally arrested in 2002 when the Marxist group was dismantled, ending its deadly 27-year campaign. Convicted in 2003, he received a 17-life term sentence, but was released in May on health grounds after a judicial panel's approval.
However, following the Supreme Court's approval of the prosecutorial decision, Giotopoulos was summoned by a prosecutor and is expected to be re-incarcerated at Korydallos prison, according to reports from police sources and the Athens News Agency.
