Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube will officially launch the Artisan and Skills Development Centre and the Renewable Energy Training Centre at Elangeni TVET College in Inchanga, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.

The launch will take place under the theme, "Skills Revolution Realised – From Skills to Production – From Training to Transformation", highlighting the growing focus on turning education and training into practical economic opportunities.

The new facilities form part of the college's broader strategy to equip students with skills that can lead directly to employment, entrepreneurship and participation in key sectors of the economy.

Major Boost for Artisan and Renewable Energy Training

The Artisan and Skills Development Centre is expected to play an important role in expanding occupational training and artisan development. The facility is designed to help address the demand for skilled workers needed across various industries that contribute to South Africa's economic growth and industrial expansion.

Alongside it, the Renewable Energy Training Centre will provide specialised training in renewable energy technologies, with a strong focus on photovoltaic systems used in solar power generation.

The centre was established through a partnership involving Elangeni TVET College, the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA), the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and the Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre (CCIEEC).

The collaboration combines local and international expertise, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing while strengthening the college's ability to offer advanced technical training in the fast-growing renewable energy sector.

Supporting Jobs, Innovation and the Energy Transition

Government views the Renewable Energy Training Centre as an important contribution to South Africa's just energy transition. Students will gain hands-on experience and industry-focused skills that align with the changing needs of the energy market.

A career exhibition will also form part of the launch programme, giving students and visitors an opportunity to explore vocational careers in artisan trades and renewable energy fields. The exhibition is expected to showcase a range of training pathways and employment opportunities available within these sectors.

The opening of the two centres marks a significant step in Elangeni TVET College's efforts to expand access to quality skills development and strengthen workforce readiness. It also reflects the growing importance of technical and vocational education in preparing young people for emerging industries while supporting economic development and job creation across South Africa.
