Gauteng Urges Parents to Keep Children Safe During Winter Break

The departments advised parents and guardians to know where their children are at all times and ensure that younger children remain under the supervision of a trusted adult.

The Gauteng Departments of Community Safety and Education have appealed to parents, guardians and caregivers to make children's safety a top priority during the winter school holidays. With public schools closing on June 26 and learners expected to return to classrooms on July 21, authorities are encouraging families and communities to remain alert as children spend more time away from school and outside their usual routines.

The departments noted that school holidays provide children with an opportunity to relax, spend time with family and friends and participate in recreational activities. At the same time, this period can expose children to a range of risks if they are left unsupervised or placed in unsafe environments. Parents and caregivers have therefore been urged to take practical steps to ensure that children remain protected throughout the holiday.

Parents Asked to Stay Alert and Supervise Children

The departments advised parents and guardians to know where their children are at all times and ensure that younger children remain under the supervision of a trusted adult. They also encouraged families to teach children important personal information, including their home address and the full names and contact numbers of their parents or guardians, so they can seek help if they become separated from their families.

Children who spend more time outdoors during the holidays should also be reminded about road safety. Parents have been encouraged to teach them to use designated pedestrian crossings and avoid playing near busy roads, rivers, dams, construction sites or abandoned buildings, where the risk of accidents is significantly higher.

Officials stressed that simple safety measures and regular communication with children can help prevent many avoidable incidents during the holiday period.

Online Safety and Positive Activities Encouraged

With many children spending additional time online during the school break, parents and caregivers have also been urged to monitor internet use and discuss the dangers of communicating with strangers through social media platforms and other digital services.

The departments recommended encouraging children to participate in safe and structured educational, sporting and recreational activities that keep them engaged while supporting their physical and social development. Open conversations about personal safety, recognising suspicious behaviour and knowing when to ask for help were also highlighted as important ways to build children's confidence and awareness.

Parents have been advised not to leave children alone for extended periods without responsible adult supervision, especially younger learners who may not be able to respond appropriately in emergencies.

Community Has a Shared Responsibility

The Gauteng Departments of Community Safety and Education emphasised that protecting children is not only the responsibility of parents but also of the wider community. They said everyone, including teachers, police officers, community patrollers, street vendors and neighbours, has an important role to play in creating safer environments for children.

Officials encouraged residents to report cases of child abuse, neglect, exploitation, missing children or any other criminal activity to the nearest police station without delay. Members of the public have also been urged to support community safety initiatives and remain vigilant if they notice anything that could place children at risk.

Reaffirming the belief that "it takes a village to raise a child," the departments called for greater cooperation among families, communities and law enforcement agencies to ensure every child enjoys a safe and secure holiday. They wished learners, educators and parents a peaceful, enjoyable and incident-free winter school break while encouraging everyone to work together to safeguard Gauteng's children.
