Singapore is once again at the top spot on the 2019 Henley Passport Index. In October 2018, Japan had claimed the position. Germany has been pushed to the second position.

Dominic Volek, Henley & Partners managing partner said European countries have dominated the index in the 20 years. Volek said the current top 20 has seen significant movements, especially in the last several years. He added that the European countries have also been steadily dropping down ranks as Asian countries improve to take their place.

"You only need to look at Singapore. Between 2009 and 2019, to see it has improved by more than 30 score points to rise from eight place to joint first place with Japan and South Korea." Volek said South Korea has improved by nearly 40 points to rise from the 13th place to join the first.
