Just over two weeks back the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) announced it would soon release 47 new buses, which would grow its fleet to 427 as the government of Zimbabwe wanted to reduce the burden for commuting public during the peak hours. Now, finally the launch has taken place today.

President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa today took to social media to announce the commissioning of 47 new ZUPCO buses with an aim to mitigate the transport challenges felt by the commuters in the country. The buses will also provide facilities like Wi-Fi, USB connect and Real Time.

The 76-year-old Zimbabwean leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa also hinted the government’s intention to building a modern public system so that the public can travel cheaply and efficiently. He also reminded that the public transport system is a key component of a growing economy.

NewZimbabwe.com reported on July 19 that Zimbabwe sets to increase its fleet of ZUPCO buses with around 2,000 expected by the end of July. During that time, Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that he would commission the buses next week. Today, on July 31, the Head of State has fulfilled his vow of commissioning 47 new ZUPCO buses. He also said that 1,000 buses would come from China, 500 from Belerus and 200 from South Africa.

The majority of ZUPCO buses will be deployed to urban routes. Home to 70 percent of the population, the rural areas will be provided a few buses until the third phase when they will get the first priority.

“To mitigate transport challenges faced by communities, my government is currently capacitating ZUPCO. We have a number that has come in and next week or so I will be launching another fleet of buses that have come in. I have to wait and allow them all to be in before we launch them,” he said.

“My government is aware of the role modern transport infrastructure plays as a key economic enabler to the transformation of our economy and towards reaching our vision 2030,” he added.
