Upepo Energy Zambia gets support from USTDA for wind, solar, energy powerplant

The United States Trade and Development Agency has awarded a grant to a renowned Zambian energy solution firm named Upepo Energy Zambia Ltd. The objective is to finance a feasibility study for a 150 megawatt wind, solar and energy storage hybrid powerplant project in northern Zambia.

The study is said to be evaluating the optimal mix of on-site wind, solar and battery storage technologies to provide energy generation and services to the Zambian grid. According to the official statement of the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), the idea is to evaluate the optimal mix of on-site wind, solar and energy storage technologies to deliver power production and services to the Zambian grid.

Once the project is completed, it is likely to be one of the first hybrid renewable energy projects in Zambia and will provide highly-required generation and grid support to in northern part of the South African country.

"This project will also serve as a gateway for US technologies to serve an important sector in Zambia," the acting deputy director of USTDA, Todd Abrajano. However, the size of the awarded grant to Upepo Energy Zambia Ltd. is not revealed yet.

"This partnership with Upepo Energy is also a good example of the value brought by commercial cooperation between the United States and Zambia the US ambassador to Zambia, Daniel L Foote said.

Established in 1961, USTDA is an independent agency of the United States government that is aimed to advance economic development and US commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries. Located Rosslyn in Arlington County, Virginia, USTDA currently works in 66 nations.
