Five people were arrested on charges of drug peddling from Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua and Samba districts, and over Rs 4.7 lakh was seized from them, police said on Friday. Yuka Butt of Shopian and Mohammad Afzal of Anantnag were arrested with 11 kg of poppy straw during vehicle checking at Londi Morh on the Jammu-Pathankot highway in Kathua district, a police spokesman said.

He said Rs 4.75 lakh was seized from them. In Samba district's Ramgarh area, a police team seized six grams of heroin from Kuldeep Raj of Ramgarh and Ranju Choudhary of Arnia, the spokesman said.

They were on a motorcycle and were caught with the drug during a surprise checking near Chak Jhanda in Ramgarh, he said. The spokesman said, in another incident in Samba district, Anil Kumar, a resident of Gowal, was arrested with four grams of heroin.

The five people have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
