Sierra Leone sacks central bank governor

Sierra Leone's central bank governor, Patrick Conteh, has been sacked after exactly one year in the job, the government said.

No reason was given for his dismissal on Thursday but it took place as the value of the national currency, the leone, has nose-dived on the almost daily basis.

It has lost 20 percent of its value since Julius Maada Bio became president in April. One U.S. dollar is currently worth about 8,398 leone.

Bio appointed Kelfala Morana Kallon, who has been a professor of economics at the University of Northern Colorado in the United States since 1993, as the new governor.
