Zambia Postal Services workers called off strike after getting salary assurance

The unionized workers of Zambia Postal Services Corporation have withdrawn their strike after getting assurance by Management that they would start getting their salaries soon. They were in continuous protest despite threats of dismissal from work by Management.

Zampost workers spreading across Zambia continued for five months without pay and had resort to downing tools to press management to pay them their dues, Lusaka Times noted. In a circular released on December 18 signed by Postmaster General Brighton Ngoma, the continued protests by the workers have cost management a lot of revenue and cannot be tolerated any longer.

National Union for Communication Workers Lusaka Branch Chairperson Martin Ngulube confirmed to the media that the protest was called off on December 24 morning after a consensus was reached between the Union and Management that workers go back to work and salaries will be paid soon.

Ngulube said Zampost Management assured him that the payment of salaries will be one-off for all employees across the nation adding that all the workers have since returned to work. He said the Zampost workers will be working even on New Year Day to help recover the money that was lost during the time they were protesting.

"I can confirm that Management assured me that workers will be paid their salaries soon, they did not indicate whether it will be for the five months but I can confirm that by Wednesday we will know when the workers will start receiving their salaries", he added.
