China is all set to provide support to conservation of Africa’s iconic wildlife species amid threats linked to poaching, climatic stress and high rate of urbanization. According to the deputy administrator of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China, Peng Youdong, Beijing has provided funds, technology and expertise to boost wildlife protection in Africa.

“In recent years, China-Africa cooperation in the wildlife conservation has been well developed. The Chinese government and private sector have provided funds, equipment, manpower and technology to support African countries in the conservation of endangered species and habitats, and conducting capacity building trainings,” Peng Youdong said.

According to Youdong, the government of China has successfully raised the awareness of law-abiding among citizens and enterprises and intensely promoted them to engage in local wildlife conservation and fundamentally eradicate illegal wildlife trade. He even previously met with Najib Balala, Kenya’s Tourism Minister. Both the officials vowed to boost existing partnership intended to promote health of flora and fauna.

“There is a need to work together with China, develop a partnership on intelligence sharing and ensure our wildlife is protected. We should also conduct awareness on protecting wildlife,” Patrick Omondi, Ag. Director Biodiversity, Research and Planning, Kenya Wildlife Service said. On the other hand, Omondi also seeks a robust partnership with China to totally stop illegal trafficking of endangered species like Pangolins, as reported by Xinhua.
