China to continue developing friendly cooperative relations with Sudan: Lu Kang

On April 12, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told a news briefing that no matter how the situation in Sudan changes, China will continue to maintain and develop friendly cooperative relations with Sudan.

Sudanese Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf on Thursday announced the ousting of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and the government, declared a state of emergency for three months and was sworn in as head of the transitional military council which he said will rule the country during a two-year transitional period.

"China always adheres to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs and believes that Sudan is capable of handling its internal affairs and safeguarding national peace and stability," Lu said, as reported by Xinhua.

Omar al-Bashir's fall came just over a week after protests in Algeria forced the resignation of that North African country's long-ruling, military-backed president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Together, the developments represent the second generation of street protests eight years after the Arab Spring uprisings that ousted a number of long-entrenched leaders around the Middle East. But like those popular movements of 2011, the new ones face a similar dynamic — a struggle over the aftermath of an autocrat's removal.
