Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman has voiced his support for Pakistan's new government and its ability to defeating "challenges at hand" during a meeting with visiting army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the military said here.

Saudi Arabia is a close ally of Pakistan and the oil-rich Kingdom has also been a major source of economic assistance to Islamabad. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia also have close defense cooperation.

During the meeting at Mina on Tuesday, Crown Prince Salman and Gen. Bajwa discussed wide-ranging issues of mutual interest including regional security.

The Prince expressed his "strong optimism about the success of Pakistan in defeating challenges at hand," according to a tweet by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor.

The Saudi Crown Prince also expressed his best wishes and support to the newly-elected government, the tweet said, referring to the assumption of office by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on August 18.

Gen. Bajwa thanked the Saudi Crown Prince for the best wishes and support for Pakistan, the tweet said.

It said that Crown Prince Salman invited Gen Bajwa for a meeting followed by dinner at Mina.

He also congratulated the Pakistan Army chief on performing Hajj.

The meeting comes days after Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud and the crown prince congratulated Prime Minister Khan on his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party's victory in the July 25 general elections.

The Saudi king had conveyed to Khan best wishes from the kingdom and its people for the progress and prosperity of the people of Pakistan.
