Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday defended outgoing governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, saying some of his comments were wrongly interpreted.
He said the Maha Vikas Aghadi- comprising Nationalist Congress Party, Congress, and the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction of Shiv Sena- bore a special grudge against Koshyari as he had ''stopped them''. "Bhagat Singh Koshyari stopped the Maha Vikas Aghadi hence its leaders bear a special grudge against him. Koshyari had already expressed his unwillingness to give up his responsibility and now the Union government has accepted his resignation. His performance as a governor of Maharashtra was stellar," the senior BJP leader told reporters.
President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Koshyari, a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said on Sunday.
Koshyari was replaced by Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais.
"Many people tried to drag Koshyari into several controversies. Some of his comments were interpreted wrongly. But he (Koshyari) had clarified from time to time. However, the chapter is over now," he said.
The latest controversy surrounding Koshyari was about his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whom he described as the ''icon of olden times''. The remarks triggered protests from the opposition parties, who demanded that he be sacked.
Reacting to the former chief minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray's demand to hold various elections in one go, Fadnavis said, "He should meet leaders of all Opposition parties and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for 'one nation-one election' concept.
''We are already in favour of such an arrangement for holding elections. It will be good if he (Uddhav) could garner more support for it".
When asked about the timing of the Mumbai civic body's elections, Fadnavis said, "Only Supreme Court can tell you when the elections could be held."
