Those in power should not misuse their position, said Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar in Maharashtra's Jalna district, the home turf of Union minister Raosaheb Danve, after a local NCP leader said she was being harassed by the BJP.

Pawar was speaking at a party meeting in Jafrabad on Tuesday. The 82-year-old leader visited the town after Surekha Lahane, the president of the local civic body, recently aired her grievances during a party meeting in Pune. Lahane alleged that she was being troubled and not allowed to do her work at the behest of BJP leaders. She said BJP engineered a vote of no-confidence against her and complaints were filed against her with the district collector, who then submitted a report to the state urban development department. Pawar said the NCP stands behind her. He said, "I was apprised about Jafrabad Nagar Panchayat. I learnt that people elected the NCP but those in the position of authority were misusing their power against the town council." The Bhokardan-Jafrabad Assembly constituency is currently represented by BJP's Santosh Danve, son of Raosaheb Danve.

Pawar said, "Power comes and goes. Those in power should not misuse it. Power should be harnessed for the betterment of people rather than for personal gain." The NCP leader also expressed concerns over the Centre's import policy, particularly relacotton. He said cotton growers are being deprived of what is due to them because of the ban on cotton exports. He pledged to take the grievances of cotton and soybean farmers to the Union and state governments.
