Delhi BJP leaders and workers held a protest march on Friday from Shahidi Park in the central part of the city towards the secretariat over the water crisis in the national capital.

Led by Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, the protesters carried placards and raised slogans against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Sachdeva claimed that the water crisis in Delhi is a result of corruption and mismanagement by the Kejriwal government and that the people of Delhi know this.

If Delhi's population had not been deprived of 53 per cent of the city's water that is wasted during supply or is stolen, Delhiites would have received enough water, he added.

Delhi BJP general secretary Yogendra Chandolia alleged that water is not stored in the Wazirabad Barrage and if utilised properly, it could have provided water to half of the city's population.

BJP leader Bansuri Swaraj also alleged that the water crisis was created solely by the Kejriwal government.

The party said in a statement that Sachdeva and around 100 of its activists were taken to the IP Estate police station by police personnel and released later.

Delhi minister Atishi said the BJP should stop its ''dirty politics'' and instead ask its governments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to release spare water to the national capital, which is grappling with a severe water crisis amid the ongoing heat wave.

Kejriwal too said that the BJP needs to appeal to its party-run governments in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to provide some extra water to Delhi until the monsoon arrives.

Delhi is facing an acute water shortage, with the AAP government accusing Haryana of not releasing the national capital's share of water.

On Thursday, BJP Mahila Morcha office bearers held a protest outside Atishi's residence over the water crisis in the city.
